Aerina Delacroix, the wealthy daughter of an influential man, likes to live dangerously. A little too dangerously. When she is thought a traitor and nearly executed, her money and status can’t help her. The only thing that can save her is Marcus Trent.
An assassin and head of security, it is Marcus’ job to maintain peace at all costs. But is Aerina a threat to the peace, or just to his ironclad self-control?
As the chemistry heats up between the unlikely pair, a real threat to their city is discovered. Will they be able to work together to save Alba? And can Aerina win the heart of a killer?
My Thoughts
It has been a while since I enjoyed a book this much! I’m truly shocked! This was a June book from the Facebook group Quirky Blind Date with a Book and I am hooked! Firstly, very little swearing, something that is hard to come by nowadays… And even though there was romance, there was no graphic sex!! It was sweet and I appreciated the clever ways the author referred to arousal without using vulgar terms.
Now you guys know I love a good dystopian/utopian setting and this one will be appreciated by all from the the West Coast here in the US. Infact, that is where it takes place! A very future California where caste systems rule in the city with incredible technology and the outside world struggles to survive while avoiding raiders. It’s beautifully done, and shockingly realistic for the future of the World.
Characterization was great! Our heroine is definitely sheltered, the pampered bored rich girl who disguises herself as a member of the lower caste for the thrill it brings. You grow to like her as she matures and discovers how high in the clouds she really lives. The romantic interest is also wonderful! My favorite character, the stoic assassin in charge of the safety of millions residing in the terraced city. Even the side characters were full of life and back story! You get enough information that no one seems like an after thought.
There, of course, were a few things that bugged me, but honestly this had very few errors/typos/missed words/repeated words. Also, not necessarily a bad thing, book two and three focus on different couples though supposedly earlier characters pop in and out. Still I really want to know more about these two and how life changes for them!!!!!
Caste systems, birth limits, Peace and Serenity, scanning the id chip in your wrist for everything… I loved this book and can’t wait to get started on the sequel!
