So…this was the book that has been on my TBR on Goodreads the longest. Not only that but I’ve been intending to read it since it came out in ’04. How it took this long I wouldn’t be able to tell you. If you haven’t read Tamora Pierce’s other books you could probably still read this but I’d read the Song of the Lioness series at the very least.
As I write this, I’m about 25 pages into the second book and enjoying that as well. Aly is a wonderful character, with parents like hers how could she be anything but spirited. She’s been raised very aware of how the world works and it shows. Each chapter starts with lessons that Aly has received, either from books, notes or just spoken advice from the people in her life as she’s grown up. It clearly shows how she was shaped into the person she was while also continuing to tie in the prior books.
As somebody who has read all the books written prior to this in the Tortall world I really enjoyed this book. I contemplated waiting to review with the next book but I know I was on the fence with adding something new and wanted to share just in case somebody else was in the same mindset.
Has anyone else read her books? What have you thought so far? What has been your favorite book?
