Goodread Synopsis: For Gemma Green’s first time, things should have been straightforward. Find your subject, hold their gaze and push a thought into their head to save them from future disaster – Aversion complete. A pretty simple process given that the subject was to have no recollection of the experience. But Russ Tanner doesn’t seem to want to forget. In fact the more she tries to avoid him, the more he pushes to get to know her. Gemma knows she has a problem but is she facing the side effects of a failed Aversion or has the school’s tennis champ really fallen for her?

My Thoughts: Another good book. As the synopsis says, Gemma is one of a group of individuals who are able to avert the bad choices of their chosen. Interesting premise that promises so many possibilities! Gemma thinks that she is doing a fine job of going unnoticed at school and in general life, but she couldn’t be more wrong. Then when she goes to do her first aversion she has the misfortune of trying to change the mind of her Sentient Twin. It’s a great plot and well done too.
Gemma is a refreshing teen protagonist. She doesn’t make bad decision after worse decision, she does rely on her dad to help her out still instead of being a hard headed teen, and worries more about the well being of others over her own. And she really sucks at being inconspicuous, which is cute to learn. I love that she is trying to be so adult about fighting against first love and teenage hormones. I think that is my favorite part about her; she is so focused on being a good Averter and making her father proud that she is constantly trying to be anything but human.
Dad is a dirty liar. There is a reason for this but he is still a dirty, dirty liar.
Russ however, is my favorite character! He is sweet, doesn’t give up, tries so hard to be a good knight in shinning armor, doesn’t care about social standings, knows his own mind, is honest, and doesn’t freak out over everything. He is trying so hard to love Gemma but she keeps pushing him away, for his own safety of course, but he still ends up next to her no matter what she does.
The first love is also really cute: is it real or Sentient Twin related? Russ believes A, Gemma believes B. Who will be right? I’m really enjoying the innocence of the relationship and how hard Gemma is fighting her own, confused, feelings. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of innocence in romance anymore, it’s sad ;_;
Overall the story is compelling, fun, and a quick read. You easily develop feelings for Gemma and Russ, you cheer when her orb clears up, and freak out when bad guys watch her house. Page turner for the win!

If you like romance, tennis stars, good decisions, or physically running away from all your troubles give Aversion a try! If you need zombies to chase said tennis stars while they make bad decisions… Watch Zombieland and pretend they play tennis.
